History of the Campaign church of Christ

The congregation of the church of Christ at Campaign was established in 1923.  The congregation is called the Campaign church of Christ, because the church assembles in Campaign, Tennessee.  The location of Campaign was referred to as "Campaign" after 1900, when a railroad station named after a member of the “Campaign” family was located here.  A member of this family, Joseph, moved to the area in 1842, opening a store.  It has also been reported that the station was named for “Galvin Campaign,” who lived in the area in the late 1800's.

The first meeting place for the church of Christ at Campaign was a brush arbor.  The members met there until cold weather, then O. B. Payne moved some things around in his store, and the congregation met there for worship.  Later, the congregation acquired a small building near the railroad tracks.  Worship was held there until the Campaign School building and one and half acres of land, located on Pine Bluff Road, were purchased for $800.  The sum of $550 cash was paid by the church of Christ to J. F. and Ida Walling on July 12, 1927.  The assumption of a note, dated June 10, 1927 and due August 15, 1927 in the amount of $250 with interest was to be paid to the Warren County Board of Education.  The land had previously been sold by the Warren County Board of Education to J. F. Walling.  Those making the payment on behalf of the church of Christ at Campaign were O. B. Payne, Mose Martin, Claud Hillis, Claud Talley, and Clarence Talley.  The property was deeded to the church of Christ with the distinct understanding that there will be no instrumental music in the church building.  The former Campaign School building now became the church building.  This two-story building was made into a one-story building.

Elijah “Lige” D. Martin was one of the first gospel preachers for the congregation.  Some of those who preached here in the early years include Frank Gilley, a brother Brooks, Clarence Cook, a brother Mansfield, W. C. Reeder, Will Jones, Marion Thomison, and John W. High.

Some of those who served as Elders for the congregation in the early years include O. B. Payne, George Grissom, and Mason Grissom.  George Grissom began serving as an Elder in 1952.  In the 1950s, Mason Grissom was appointed an Elder.

            K. L. Travis was appointed full-time Preacher of the congregation.  He would serve into the early 1960s.  Perry Gribble served as a full-time Preacher of the congregation before leaving the work here.  Clayton Gribble also served as full-time Preacher of the congregation until the mid-1960s.

In the mid-1960s, Levoy Duncan became the Preacher of the congregation.  In or near unto the 1960s, Jesse Taylor, Roy Patton, and Virgil Locke began serving as Deacons.  Levoy Duncan would remain with the congregation until the late 1960s.

In 1969, Marion Ward became the full-time Preacher of the congregation.  He preached here for over thirteen years.  Also, the Elders decided that a new building was needed for the congregation, so it was built and completed with the first worship service occurring in the new building in 1973.  An “Open House” and Homecoming was held in June of 1973.  A paved black top parking lot was completed, and the old building was torn down.

In the 1970s, James Rowland, Kelly Rowland, L. C. Mayfield, Burton Grissom, and Charles Hale began serving as Deacons.  Roy Patton served as a Deacon until he passed away 1973.  Jesse Taylor, who served as a Deacon, passed away in 1974.  Virgil Locke served as a Deacon until he passed away in 1977.  Marion Ward remained as Preacher for the congregation until 1982.

In 1982, James Rice was appointed as full-time Preacher for the congregation, and he preached here for 29 years.  Also, James Rowland became an Elder in the 1980s.  The Elders decided to have a fellowship hall added to the church building, so it was added in 1983.  In 1988, Burton Grissom resigned from being a Deacon.  In 1989, Charles Hale resigned from being a Deacon.  In 1989, George Grissom resigned from the Eldership.  In 1994, Kelly Rowland resigned from being a Deacon.

In 1999, Kelly Rowland was appointed to the Eldership.  On the same day in 1999, Steve Mayfield, Kevin Rowland, and Monty Rowland were appointed Deacons, serving with L. C. Mayfield.  Monty Rowland later resigned from being a Deacon.

In 2006, Mason Grissom, who was serving as an Elder, passed away.  In 2007, Greg Rowland was appointed as a Deacon.  James Rowland and Kelly Rowland continued to serve as Elders until 2010, when Kelly Rowland resigned.  In 2010, Steve Mayfield began assisting James Rice in preaching during one service each month and by filling-in for the regular preacher when he is not here.  James Rice remained as Preacher of the congregation until 2011.

In 2011, Jason Gann became the full-time Preacher of the Campaign church of Christ, and he is the current Preacher.  The congregation has experienced much growth at various times through the years.  Jason Gann has preached for the congregation for over 14 years.

In 2011, Steve Mayfield became Assistant Preacher for the congregation.  He preaches in one service each month.  He also fills-in for the regular preacher when he is not here.

In 2011, the congregation began having prayer services for the families of members of the congregation who pass away.  These services are held just after a cherished member of the congregation passes away.  These include times of announcements, singing, Scripture reading, praying, along with an invitation.  These occur during a Bible Study time in which all classes remain together.  We have held special prayer services for various members’ families throughout the years.

On January 1, 2012, the Campaign church of Christ website was launched by Jason Gann at the www.campaignchurchofchrist.org address.  In that year, the first Sweetheart Night, also called Sweetheart Day, was held to honor the married couples.  It is held yearly in February.  There have been 13 of these held for the congregation.  In 2012, a special “Honoring Our Graduates” fellowship meal was given to honor our graduates.  Various “Honoring Our Graduates” fellowship meals have been held throughout the years since that time.

On January 1, 2013, the Campaign church of Christ Facebook page was officially launched by Steve Mayfield at the www.facebook.com/campaignchurchofchristcampaigntn address.  Charles Gann presented the idea of having a New Year’s Breakfast for a Saturday in January of 2013.  The first New Year’s Breakfast was held in 2013, in which the men prepare food for the ladies.  It scheduled for yearly on a Saturday in January.  There have been 12 of these held for the congregation.

In August of 2013, a telephone was added to the church building.  This telephone line includes the times of the services of the church.  Any one may call this and also hear the Plan of Salvation and Second Law of Pardon given.  Through this means, the Gospel continues to be spread.  The telephone number is 931-686-8520.

On February 18, 2017, a bookcase was donated to the congregation in memory of Shirley Gann, a loving wife, mother, grandmother, mother-in-law, and Christian by Jason, Brandi, “Little” Shirley, Jase, and Allie Gann.  This would be used for our church library.  Many books are available for reading along with DVDs to watch in the library.

In 2018, a bell was added to the outside of the building in front of the fellowship hall.  It tolls to remind residents in Campaign to prepare for Bible Study and worship on Sunday morning.  This is the same bell that was in the Campaign School building that was located on these grounds.  This is the same building that was the original building for the congregation.  This bell was taken down when the new building was built.  The new bell rang for the first time in over 40 years by Joel Tenpenny at 9:45 AM in preparation for the 10:00 AM Bible Study and 11:00 AM Worship on November 11, 2018.

On August 4, 2019, the list of the formally organized church library was prepared by Jason Gann and given to the congregation.  This list contains every book and DVD available within the church library.  The church library is located in the office.

Our world and country faced a pandemic that began in 2020 and lasted for a few years.  In the face of this, the Campaign congregation continued to meet every Sunday.  Pandemic precautions were taken from March 18, 2020 until January 1, 2023.  These were gradually loosened over time.  We are so thankful that God blessed us to be able to continue to meet during this challenging time.

On July 11, 2021, the Pew Packers class began.  It is held prior to the Sunday Second Worship Service each week and is taught by Jason Gann.  It is a time of singing and learning more about the Bible to prepare our young people for their regular Bible classes for the week.  The current students in this class are listed in order from oldest to youngest:  Baylor Cook, Ellie Dixon, Lettie Dixon, Allie Gann, Graceley Gann, Jase Gann, Sesley Gann, and Shirley Gann.

In September of 2021, a program of handing out church cards was developed.  These cards contain information about the church, including our service times, location, website, and the Plan of Salvation.  These have been handed out to many through the years and continue to be handed out, also.  Over a thousand of these have been developed for the congregation to use.

In 2022, the Pantry for the congregation was organized with different items for different shelves.  This pantry is used to help people in need.  It is also used to help support orphans.

2023 marked 100 years for the congregation.  On March 26, 2023, the congregation held a special Friends and Family Homecoming Day to thank God for the 100 years in which He blessed our congregation and continues to bless the congregation.  The theme for this special day was “100 Years of This Congregation Serving the Lord.”  The schedule included the Sunday Morning Bible Study at 10:00, the Sunday Morning Worship Service at 11:00, a fellowship meal following the Sunday Morning Worship Service, a Gospel Singing at 1:00 PM, Remembering the Past 100 Years at 1:30 PM, and the Sunday Afternoon Worship at 2:00.  Jason Gann, the preacher for the congregation, was the speaker for the Worship Services and Adult Bible Study Class.  He spoke on subjects such as “Shining Forth as Lights unto the World,” “Following God’s Blueprint for the Church,” and “Pressing into the Future toward Heaven.”  Various song leaders led songs during the Gospel Singing.  During the “Remembering the Past 100 Years” time, Jason Gann shared the history of the congregation along with a slideshow.  Then, Steve Mayfield, Kevin Rowland, James Rowland, and Jason Gann shared memories of the congregation.  This special event was covered by various publications.  The parking lot was packed.  Various current members of the congregation, former members of the congregation, and visitors came to be with us on this day.  The humble beginnings of the congregation were examined and there was much reminiscing about the days gone by with great anticipation for the future as the congregation continues to grow.

In January of 2025, the Bible Study Classes began using the following Quarter Schedule.  The Quarters are Winter (January-March), Spring (April-June), Summer (July-September), and Fall (October-December).  Curriculum for youth classes changes each quarter.  The Sunday Morning Bible Classes focus on the New Testament.  The Wednesday Night Bible Classes focus on the Old Testament.  There are classes for all ages.

The congregation has sound Gospel preaching from the pulpit and sound Gospel teaching in each Sunday morning and Wednesday night Bible study class.  We expect only the Bible to be preached and taught.  We are thankful to hear the Word!
Some who were Song Leaders in the past were:  Mason Grissom, Johnny Baker, Fred Sain, James Rowland, Steve Mayfield, Greg Rowland, Alex Rowland, Michael Hillis, Casey Solomon, and Carl Watson.  Our current Song Leader is Kevin Rowland.  We work to sing with our hearts to God and admonish each other.

Each week, the congregation has two worship services on Sunday and Bible study classes on Sunday morning and Wednesday night.  We love to sing, pray, preach and hear preaching, partake of the Lord’s Supper, and give on each Sunday.  Various men take the lead in offering acts of worship.

The congregation has been taught by various Bible Class teachers through the years.  The current Bible Class teachers include Lindsey Dixon, Brandi Gann, Jason Gann, Brittany Mayfield, Steve Mayfield, Kevin Rowland, and Lisa Rowland.  Currently 5 Bible Classes are offered on each Sunday morning and each Wednesday night.

At various times, the congregation has enjoyed Wiener Roasts, Picnics, Cook-outs, and other times of fellowship.  Various wedding showers and baby showers have been given throughout the years.  Fruit Basket Work nights are held following a Wednesday Night Bible Study in December, and then are delivered to various ones.  FUEL Bags are also prepared for school children every week for two months out of a year to help provide these children in need with food.

The congregation also helps to spread the Gospel through the local newspaper, the financial support of missionaries, and the training of future Gospel preachers and teachers.  The congregation is also involved in supporting orphans and others who are truly in need.  We stand ready to help do our part to bring as many as we can unto Christ.

The Campaign church of Christ is a very active church involved in many areas of the Lord’s work.  The Campaign congregation fulfills the works of evangelism, edification, and benevolence.  It is our prayer and hope that as long as this earth stands, the Campaign church of Christ will be a city set upon a hill in this area and world.  The Lord has blessed the congregation with 102 years, and we hope that if the earth stands, many more to come.  Glory be to God for everything!
